A hands-on workshop series for Leeward Oʻahu teachers of grades K-12 In this new course, teachers will explore the value of gardens and considerations toward having a sustainable garden. As more gardens are emerging in schools and home, it is important to know how to tend to them so that they are not only productive, but also not harmful to the environment. Topics such as types of plants that can be grown safely, composting, organic pesticide use, and invasive species prevention will be covered by experts int he field. Teachers will also see examples of field sties that could provide excellent service learning opportunities for their students. A teacher does not need to have a school or home garden to be eligible for this course. Thanks to our partnership with the Hawai’i State Teachers Association (HSTA), you can earn 3 PD credits by completing the full requirements of the course. The dates are February 4 and February 25, 2017 plus a half-day volunteer experience of your choice related to agriculture or invasive species control. To apply, please complete this Online Application. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis. Spaces are limited and the deadline to apply is January 4, 2017 so don't wait! The program fee is $150 paid directly to HSTA, which includes meals and supplies.
