Hoʻākea Mauka to Makai
Honoring the rich history and traditions of Hawaiian voyaging
Hoʻākea Waiʻane April 15-18, 2026
Join us for an inspirational day of learning about aloha 'āina, ocean safety, traditional navigational skills, knot tying, and free sails on traditional wa'a kaulua (double-hulled canoes).
Hoʻākea is an initiative spearheaded by Superintendent Hayashi and sponsored by the DOE, various waʻa (canoe) and aloha ʻāina (land and ocean based) organizations in our communities across the Hawaiian Islands provide hands-on learning experiences that perpetuate foundational values and perspectives of wayfinding.
We hope that Hoʻākea inspires our students, schools, and larger community to embrace the "Navigator Mindset and become the leaders, stewards, and critical thinkers" that can navigate us into a brighter future.
