Awāwalei Food Forest
A food forest is taking root at Awāwalei (aka "Urban ʻĀina ") --our two-acre plot at the Hawaiʻi Agricultural Research Center in Kunia. The once fallow field is transforming into an educational community garden with edible, native, and culturally significant plants. Koa, ʻulu (breadfruit), coconut, ʻuala (sweet potato), and crown flower are growing alongside over 18 varieties of citrus trees and more than 30 varieties of kalo!
The Awāwalei Food Forest is an awesome place for people to learn about sustainable agriculture as well as the many connections between food and culture. Opportunities abound for exploring different planting methods, soil preparation, traditional uses of plants, and much more! |
