Aloha
Kākou --
Welcome
to the Mālama Learning Center.
The Mālama Learning Center is a shared vision among educators,
conservation groups, businesses, and community members to create
an innovative learning center in Kapolei to promote healthy, sustainable
living in an island environment. The Mālama Learning Center
will serve the people of O‘ahu, with emphasis on Kapolei
and West O‘ahu communities.
What
is the Mālama Learning Center?
The Mālama Learning Center is a non-profit organization that
brings art, science, conservation, and culture together to promote
sustainable living throughout Hawai‘i.
While we are conducting pilot educational programs for the community,
we have embarked on planning for construction of a “green”
building on a three-acre site near the entrance to Kapolei High
School. This building will have:
- classrooms
- a performance
theatre
- amphitheatre
- dance studio
- native
plant gardens and nurseries
- exhibit
areas
- program
and business offices
The
Mālama Learning Center will be responsive to environmental
conditions specific to West O‘ahu and follow green and sustainable
building practices. It will educate and inspire the whole community
about environmental responsibility, equipping them with the skills
needed to understand and preserve Hawai‘i's resources.
What
will the MLC provide?
The Mālama Learning Center will address the interests of
a growing and vibrant community through the arts and education,
and serve as a three-dimensional textbook blending environment,
culture, arts, science, and technology. It will be a gathering
place where the community learns to perpetuate the Hawaiian culture
and values of caring for the land and sea, and be inspired through
the creative arts through classes, workshops, performances, volunteer
service projects, and more. It will create a unique environment
in which learners of all ages, ability, and experience can participate.
And it will be a defining landmark for the new and growing community
of Kapolei, a revolutionary place that will attract, involve and
benefit many partners.
Through this website, we hope to keep you informed on the creation
of the Mālama Learning Center, and invite you to get involved
-- as a volunteer, donor, committee member... any help is appreciated.
Please contact us with your ideas.
We would like to say "mahalo" to the generous donors
who have already shown their support
for the Mālama Learning Center.
